What is the difference between a stove and a furnace?

There a number of different heating appliances available, and depending on the heat you want and where you intend to mount it there are a lot of different choices. Here's the basic terminology:

Furnace =

A large industrial-looking heater with a high volume air blower that is purely for heating and not designed for decor. Furnaces are usually mounted in basements or in a utility room. They are generally windowless, though some do have a decorative door.

Boiler =

A hot water boiler is used for just that: Bringing water to near-boiling temperatures using fire. These appliances are most often used for baseboard heating systems, although they can be used to heat potable water as well.

Stove =

A stove is a freestanding fire appliance, usually (but not always) with a decorative windowed front. Stoves usually have four legs or a single base.

Fireplace=

By far the most broad heating appliance term, a fireplace is usually located in a wall or a chimney, although vent-free models can be found in cabinets. While generally considered a permanent addition to a home, some gas and electric fireplaces can be hung on a wall.

Insert =

This heating appliance type requires an existing fireplace; it sits inside the fireplace and the extra-large surround (the metal around the edge) usually overlaps the opening. Inserts can be removed, but most require additional venting to the chimney.

Gas logs =

These appliances require an existing masonry fireplace or prefabricated firebox installed in your home. They are designed to resemble wood logs or coal, but actually run on natural gas or liquid propane.

What type of fuel should I use?

Your choice of fuels makes a big difference in the type of heat you'll enjoy, and the amount of maintenance you'll have to perform to keep it operating. Here are the most common heating fuels:

Wood =

These features burn logs of wood. All wood fire features require venting of some kind (like a chimney). Some wood appliances use a catalytic combuster to burn longer and at higher heat.

Pro:

  • Traditional
  • High heat output
  • Cheap

Con:

  • Dirty
  • High maintenance
  • Bulky fuel

Coal =

Features with this fuel type burn either large chunks of anthracite coal or smaller chips of "rice" coal. Known for high heat and fuel efficiency, if you have a line on the fuel. All coal features require venting such as a chimney.

Pro:

  • High heat output
  • Very efficient
  • Cheap fuel

Con:

  • Dirty
  • High maintenance
  • Fuel can be hard to get and store

Pellets =

Wood pellets are readily available in some parts of the country (especially the Northeast), and pellet stoves combine the high heat output of wood with the ease of rice coal. All wood pellet stoves require venting such as a chimney.

Pro:

  • High heat output
  • Very efficient
  • Lightweight fuel

Con:

  • Medium maintenance
  • Fuel can be hard to get and store

Corn =

Fuel-grade corn can sometimes be used in place of wood pellets, making it ideal for areas that have corn available instead of wood. Some features can use either corn or wood pellets, but not all wood pellet heaters can use corn.

Pro:

  • High heat output
  • Very efficient
  • Lightweight fuel

Con:

  • Medium maintenance
  • Fuel can be hard to get and store

Gas =

Natural gas burns cleaner than solid fuel, and is more plentiful and cheaper than it used to be. Natural gas hardware is usually less bulky but more complex than appliances of other fuel types. Som

Pro:

  • Medium heat output
  • Extremely efficient
  • Slim profile
  • May not require venting

Con:

  • Medium maintenance
  • Fuel is common but usually requires a monthly bill

Propane =

Liquid propane is refined during the manufacture of gasoline. Because of its stability, it is frequently used as a fuel source in rural areas, and can be stored in a variety of tank sizes.

Pro:

  • Medium heat output
  • Portable
  • Extremely efficient
  • Slim profile
  • May not require venting

Con:

  • Medium maintenance
  • Fuel is common but can be expensive

Fuel Oil =

Fuel oil used to be a popular choice for furnaces, but isn't as popular as it used to be. It can be delivered and stored in a variety of tanks near the home.

Pro:

  • High heat output
  • Cheap fuel
  • Portable

Con:

  • Medium maintenance
  • Fuel is not common and can be expensive to have delivered.

Bio Gel =

Ethanol gel is an alternative to fossil fuels. It burns relatively clean and long but is expensive to produce and is primarily used as a decorative flame rather than a source of heat. Primarily for outdoor use.

Pro:

  • Very low maintenance
  • Burns long
  • Burns clean

Con:

  • Relatively low heat output
  • Expensive fuel
  • Spills can be dangerous

Electricity =

There are a number of electric heaters on the market and most feature blowers and flames that can be shown with or without the heat on. Almost all are thin enough to hang on a wall or be built into a wall without a lot of modification to a home.

Pro:

  • Very low maintenance
  • Most heaters are slim and wall mountable.

Con:

  • Low heat output
  • Most common fuel but can increase your electrical bills

I am REALLY pleased!  The picture of it does not do it justice.  That is the prettiest piece of wood, and a contractor doing some work in my home said that the grain in the edge looks just like Damascus steel.  I do wish the pic could give you a better indication of what I will enjoy for the rest of my life!
