Use them to add a distinct ...

Generally speaking, volcanoes are bad (you could ask the people in Pompeii, if they were still around to argue the point). But as it turns out, they're not all bad -- they give us lava rock! The flow of lava as it travels fills it up with micro-pockets of gas that gives the cooled rock a unique texture among stones. It's porous makeup allows it to be a near-perfect natural insulator from heat, and a great breathable coating for soil for landscaping. This lava rock has been sifted so that every granule is roughly 1/2" in diameter, allowing it to pack a little tighter than larger types ...

What is this stuff used for?

These are types of media that are most commonly used in gas fire pits and gas fireplaces to cover up burners. They not only hide a metal burner from view, they also help to disperse heat and create a more chaotic airflow that helps has flames to look less artificial.

Can't I just use broken glass or rocks from my yard/stream instead?

NO! Lava rocks, river rocks, and fire glass are NOT like normal rocks or glass, so please don't try to substitute rocks from your garden or stream instead.

These fire media are designed to withstand high heat evenly without breaking or cracking.

Regular rocks and glass pieces can build up heat within them and explode, causing damage to your fire feature, your property, and very possibly, you.

Can I use these materials for something else?

Absolutely! Tempered glass is often mixed in with concrete and cement to create a beautiful terrazzo for walkways and structures, but it is also popular in landscaping to create bright colors in gardens, flower beds, and rock gardens.

Lava rock is often used outdoors as an aerating fill. If you intend to use lava rock outdoors please be aware that it is full of pockets of air that will cause it to float in water and possibly wash away in heavy rainstorms. Only use lava rock in areas with proper drainage.

What are the differences?

Depending on what look you are going for, you need to pick the right type of fire media for you:

Lava rocks are porous and have a craggy, earthy look to them. Lava rock (being the most affordable) is also used many times as a filler in the bottom 2/3rds of a fire feature, with just a small layer of other fire media atop it for color.

River rocks are either lava rock that has been tumbled smooth, or casted fireproof ceramic or concrete, and have a gentle earthy look to them.

Fire glass is shiny and the pieces have an iridescent and opulent look to them.

Can I mix fire glass and lava rock?

YES, it's common to do so, and there are a couple of different ways that it can be beneficial to you:

  • If you're looking to save a bit of cash on the fire glass needed for a large project, start with a layer of high temp lava rock to "fill in space," then cover with a layer of fire glass on top.
  • Mix some bright yellow or orange clear and reflective fire glass with some lava rock, and you get a pile of artificial "ash" with some "hot embers" within!

We even have a handy fire glass calculator to figure out how much fire glass you'll need to get the job done efficiently!

Fire pit has small flame
When I put my fire pit glass on top of the orafice, it seems like the glass is covering the hole/ports and the fire is very sporadic which is limiting the heat from the pit. Any suggestions on what I can do?

Restocking 35%
Make sure you know before buying anything from Fireside Expressions that they will charge you 35% for any returns, even if the box is unopened. They don't have to do a lot of sales, they meet their targeted revenue from restocking fees. FIRESIDEXPRESSIONS ANSWER: Dear Ms. Lynch, Firesidexpressions does not charge restocking fees to make money. Restocking fees are charged by manufacturers and vendors to cover the costs of re-entering items into inventory, inspecting the items and re-boxing them in new boxes and filing the paperwork. We also must pay the re-stocking fees if we don’t normally stock items. By the way, I know that the BBB did pass along our offer to share the restocking fees and lower your rate to 25%. They told us that you did not think that was good enough.
